SEVENTH DAY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
From the Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery Circular in 1958:
"In 1879, in what was then known as Cartwright, Wis., Mr. & Mrs. Perry Sweet gave an acre of their land to the newly organized Seventh Day Baptist Church for the specific purpose of erecting a church building. The west portion of this land was to be used for burial purposes. A 99 year lease was granted and later, in 1901, a quit claim deed was signed by the Perry Sweet heirs, giving the church title, but reserving the land for purposes originally granted.
In 1882, the cemetery portion was surveyed under the direction of D. W. Cartwright with Mr. Abrahamson, surveyor. Thirty-six lots were established, 20' x 16' in size with an additional eighteen half-lots measuring 11' x 16' marked along the north and south sides of the cemetery.
Although the cemetery apparently remained under the jurisdiction of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, it was used by the community at large, for until the establishment of the New Auburn Cemetery Association in 1909 and the location fo its cemetery south of town on County Highway Q, it was the only cemetery for the village.
The lots were sold on the basis of $5 per lot ($2.50 for 1/2 lot), but the records reveal that not all of these were paid for. The money collected was used for the upkeep of the cemetery, but it was hardly enough to guarantee perpetual care.
For the past several years, the care of the cemetery has been left to those who have relatives buried there. Some lots have been neglected completely. Record (sic) have been largely lost and the whole appearance has been abandonment.
In 1956-7, a new church was built on the east portion of the lot, and general landscaping has been in progress. As a part of the over all program of village improvement, the Village Board in cooperation with the S. D. B. Church is undertaking the rennovation (sic) and up-keep of the cemetery.
This circular is distributed for information and the arrousal (sic) of interest. If you have additional information to correct or complete the records, send to: Rev. Don A. Sanford, New Auburn, Wisc."
The Village now owns the SDB Cemetery since the 1970s. If you have any older photos of the cemetery, a tombstones, or the area in general we would love to have them for Village record purposes. You can contact Village Administrator-Clerk-Deputy Treasurer Bradley J Hanson at bhanson@newauburn-wi.com or 715-237-2223.
